Women are often accused of lacking the ability to keep silent. But I think we\u2019re doing the cosmos a huge favor by exercising our vocal cords at the drop of a provocative hat (My hubby owns dozens of those hats!\u263a\ufe0f)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But seriously can you imagine humanity existing in silence?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not speaking and speaking are both human ways of existing in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Paul Goodman, silence is of nine types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s the dumb silence of slumber or apathy\u2026The sober silence that goes with a solemn animal face\u2026The fertile silence of awareness, when new thoughts emerge\u2026 the alive silence of alert perception, ready to say, \u201cThis\u2026 this\u2026\u201d\u2026The musical silence that accompanies absorbed activity\u2026The silence of listening to another speak, and catching the drift\u2026 The noisy silence of resentment and self-recrimination\u2026 The baffled silence of stupor\u2026 The silence of peaceful accord with other persons, or communion with the cosmos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So next time you\u2019re silent, try and decipher which kind of silence envelopes you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because silence \u2026 can be fertilizing, it can bathe the imagination, and rejuvenate it\u2026especially when you\u2019re reading poetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
